Add IRC external client ability

It would be extremely nice to be able to connect to chat via an external client. Especially on a mobile that doesn’t have the Eterna app yet.

Scroll down to see how Foldit handles it: http://fold.it/portal/info/faq

Edit: As Nando has Noted, it can be done, however the interface to do so is not pretty…

yes, agreed.

Take a look at https://getsatisfaction.com/eternagam… for some suggestions, they don’t work for me, though

@salish99: I know of one possible reason why you may not be able to connect to the 174.129.26.87 IRC server: it seems that the server (or the network where it is sitting in) has some public IP ranges blacklisted. For instance, I cannot connect directly to it from Mainland China (Shanghai or Beijing). So, depending on where you’re located physically (Hong Kong maybe?), this could be “normal”. Another reason why you may not be able to connect directly is related to the number of simultaneous connections from your IP address. Say you have 5 or more tabs in your browser opened on EteRNA, each of them uses a distinct TCP connection to the server, which limits to 5 per IP. Then your next tabs, or your IRC clients won’t be able to connect…

@LFP6: as mentioned in the other thread, it is possible to connect to the server with an IRC client. I doubt it would solve your problem though, because interacting with the channel (#global) requires additional code. Hoglahoo scripted something for mIRC, and I coded my own plugin for FireFox/ChatZilla, but I’m not aware of a scriptable IRC client for mobiles, and for which an EteRNA-plugin would have been authored…
