Are there strategies that lead to faster improvement of ones rank as a player?

Challenge puzzles gives most points, so go for them first. If you find the lower level puzzles too easy, you are allowed to jump to the higher level ones. They gives more points.

Also start playing labs when you can - and voting. You can get points both for designs and votes even if your design is not picked. If you vote for one that gets picked you get points. If your design is similar to one that gets picked you get points. It’s only very other week, but it adds up.
